Top News 2-28-09

The top news would have to be on Tuesday night when President Obama addressed the nation and Congress. He promised worried Americans that the U.S. "will emerge stronger than before." Obama also promised the country will recover from its current crisis.

The reason this is the top news is because it shows what the government's message is to the American public. It is important to understand the government's confidence in itself and the people within the country. Also, the message was just a couple days ago, making it still timely.

The novelty public figure, Barack Obama, also makes this address more newsworthy. This address can affect anyone in this country because it can help establish confidence within those that hear it. Those that are feeling doubt about the economic crisis and the stimulus bill can feel more assured by it.

  1. Timeliness and impact, yes. Novelty, no.

Obama's role in this story reflects the news value of Prominence, not Novelty. As I've suggested before, you need to review the list of news values on p. 17 of the text.
